Connections & Circuits Project – First prints

I’ve been very quiet on my blog while working through my first print designs.  Several things have happened over recent weeks which are pushing this project in a slightly different direction than intended.

  • The theme of circuits and circuitry is leading me inextricably towards connections and connectivity, which is a little sideways to what I had in mind originally.  I chose ‘inextricably’ to describe what is happening as the dictionary description says (in part):
    • 1 – from which one cannot extricate oneself
    • 2 – incapable of being disentangled, undone, loosed, or solved
    • 3 – hopelessly intricate, involved, or perplexing
  • Immediately I moved from samples to printing proper I realised that the more complex the monoprinted background effects the more satisfaction I got.  The intended backgrounds are becoming the main focus of each piece.
  • Collage, other additions and even stitching are now considerations.  Originally they were to be overlaid with lino- or wood-cuts.

Here is a bit of what I’ve been up to.  Most designs, at this stage, sit a little to the right of centre in anticipation  of stitching into book format; so should end up perfectly positioned.

Based on the grabbing tool you see in kids pick-up games at the funfair.

A heavy grey with clear markings, plus a crisp cut stencil.

Alternating dark and light grey roll-over resulting in an undulating appearance.

What appears to be a simple print but is actually a mix of 4 processes.

The ‘claw’, this time vertical.

Dynamism resulting from the addition of vibrant yellow.

A multitude of processes with the addition of ‘honeycomb’.

Turbulent grey with chroma reduced overlay.

Focusing on a conduit.

You have some really interesting abstract images developing.

This is really fascinating, Claire. As I go through the related posts, I might find the answer, but I was curious – how large are the prints?

I think I see what you mean by “satisfying” when you were doing these. I really like the horizontal claw with the hexagonal repeated pattern; it definitely conveys as satisfying feeling the way it’s arranged. Very cool!

Thanks Jon. Each page is 5″x11 1/2″ (13cmx29cm), designed to go into a Japanese bound book as single pages once complete.
I’m working on two themes now; this very linear and manufactured style and something a little more in the real world. In a couple of weeks I’m off for a 5 day intensive printing retreat and see this theme continuing there as I can immerse myself into some experimental etching without worrying about drawing realistic subjects.
