Monthly Challenge – Month 5: Butterfly theme

The folder I received this month is all about butterflies.

BackgroundThe background fabric was supplied and I added the green sheer just to give a little variety and depth before layering my other features.

Flowers-&-leavesThe flowers are made on wool felt base.  The centres are needle-felted silk fibre, with the outer parts punch needled using a thick sparkly rayon yarn.  It was extremely difficult to keep the yarn in place with this method.  Next time I would do giordes knots as it would be more secure.  It’s a very thick yarn and hard to use unless couching.

Butterfly-cut-outThe leaves are needle-felted onto the same wool base with machine stitched details, then cut out.

The butterfly is machine stitched using a digitized design.  I tried it out on a cotton fabric base first.  The one here was done on organza and then cut out so it would be free-standing.

All the components were then assembled onto the background.
