Exercise 2 – Tonal Study

Tonal study with pencils

Tonal study with charcoals

It has been interesting to see just how fast, or slow, different pencils blunt and what changes that makes in their mark-making.  The charcoals in particular can create quite a different look depending on whether a charcoal pencil, compressed stick or willow stick is used.  I’ve been playing with hard, medium and soft in both the compressed sticks and the pencils.  Looking forward to trying the coloured charcoal pencils and the pastels next.
